It is about a simple life and a man observing other people. We see everything through his eyes. He doesn't realize till the end the impact that the simple animal had had on him, that he loved Modestine despite her occasional stubborness as the animal that she was. There isn't much plot so that may deter some from the book but it is a wonderful story about life. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2021 )

"Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes" is the more delightful, every bit as witty and picturesque as his pirate tales. Possibly OCRed from a very poor original. For example the original (Folio) describing his invented sleeping bag; "This child of my invention was nearly six feet square, exclusive of two triangular flaps to serve as a pillow by night and as top and bottom of the sack by day"; Kindle "This infant of my invention changed into nearly six feet square, one of a kind of two triangular flaps to function a pillow by night time and because the top and backside of the sack by using day" (sic - really!). Possibly edited by someone who cannot speak English or by some inferior AI machine that understands nothing. Amazon should refund the purchase price and re-edit this book - and a grovelling apology for having so abused a wonderful book would be nice.... ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 24, 2021 )

The most glaring howler is that (presumably by digital error) every em dash has been changed to a single hyphen, without even a space to prevent words from running together across the page. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Maxwell Park -- Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes. : This is a relatively short book but written with Stevenson's customary flair, both in his use of language and his skill in bringing places and people to life. His early travails centre round the almost insuperable difficulties with his mode of transport, namely his donkey, but these are overcome with great forbearance and some advice from local people. It's a fascinating account of a time and place that has the rare quality of having the reader feel he or she is accompanying the author on his journey. To travel around foreign parts without a human companion in the latter half of the 19th century and to at times sleep under the stars is testimony to Stevenson's robustness and tenacity, bearing in mind that this was only a few years before he developed tuberculosis. I believe he was around 28 years old when he made this journey but his health deteriorated steadily in the decade leading to his death in 1894. A minor classic and a very enjoyable read. The language and journal is beguiling, full of the humour and wit you might expect of an author so much loved. I like travel and history and this delivered a little flavour of both, with a hint of donkey lore thrown in for good measure. Little gems like this should not be lost.
